Entering Christ's College, Cambridge at age twelve, he was a lecturer in Catherine Hall at age 16 and began studies for his M.A. degree. He was converted in 1619 and licensed a preacher of the Univesity in 1625. Appointed as Lecturer at Trinity Church in 1628, he was awarded his B.D. in 1630. In 1632 obtained the vicarage of Trinity Church. Due to the nonconformity, he resigned his vicarage in 1633, resigned the lecturship at Trinity in 1634 and was forced to flee to Holland in 1639.

Returning to England in 1642, he was pastor of an Independent congregation in the parish of St. Dunstan's-in-the-East, near Thomas Street. He often preached before Parliament and in 1643 was appointed a commissioner to the Westminster Assembly. Appointed a lecturer at Oxford, he lost the position when Charles II ascended the throne. He moved to London, along with his church and ministered at Fetter Lane Independent Church for the rest of his life.
