| HORATIUS BONAR
December 19, 1808 - July 31, 1889
Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, he was from a long line of theologians, dating back some two
hundred years. He was educated in the High School of Edinburgh. After graduating from the
University of Edinburgh, he was ordained minister of the North Parish in Kelso, November 30,
1837 and received his license to preach. He served as assistant to Rev. John Lewis at St. James's
in Leith. During his tenure there, he began writing songs for children. After the "Disruption" in
May 1843, he left the Established church but remained in Kelso. At that time, he then became a
minister of the Free Church of Scotland. In 1853 he received his Doctorate of Divinity from the
University of Aberdeen. He remained in Kelso for 28 years and then took a position at the
Chalmers Memorial Church in Edinburgh, where he served for the rest of his life. Dr. Bonar
wrote
extensively, authoring many books and during his lifetime, wrote more than six hundred hymns,
many of which are still in hymnbooks today.
